FF -a partir de su hipotesis sobre el “fin de la historia”-, sostiene que en las sociedades postindustriales el progreso ya no podrá ser obtenido a través de ninguna propuesta nueva de “ingeniería social”. El progreso, el dinamismo de la sociedad depende de la vitalidad de la “sociedad civil”, construida - a su vez- a partir de la familia, “the primary instrument by wich people are socialized into their culture and given the skills that allow them to live in broader society and through wich the values and knowledge of that society are transmitted across the generations”. 

FF discute la tesis de Huntington del conflicto cultural, a partir de la hipótesis según la cual la cultura se ha convertido en uno de los principales factores del desempeño económico de las naciones. “As this book wil show, one of the most important lessons we can learn from an examination of economic life is that a nation’s well-being, as well as its ability to compete, is conditioned by a single, pervasive cultural characteristic: the level of trust inherent in the society”.
